During last week Feng Shui / Renovation Talks, I asked the audiences whether they can do renovation during the Lunar-7th month? Most of them said cannot, some not sure, even a Malay lady also said better not, her reason was since everyone also says don’t renovate in the Lunar-7th month then we follow la. WOW, you all are more (Pantang) superstitious than a Feng Shui Practitioner. I teased the audiences. Before they are ghosts, they were once human begin. Just like human being, ghost also likes to have a peaceful environment, good food and drinks, etc. Hence, for a new homeowner that wishes to renovate their house during the Lunar-7th month but have second thoughts, my suggestion is you better do your renovation. Why? When your neighbour’s house is busy doing renovation, many activities in the house, many workers working in the house, there is no peace. Hence, the ghost will go to your home since your home has no activity, more peaceful and have food and drinks. Very welcoming for the ghost. However, should one do an in-depth study into the history of the Lunar-7th month and not listen to folklore or be superstitious one will find out that the Ghost Month is based on the Buddhist tale of ‘Mulian Rescues His Mother From Hell’. Based on Wikipedia, Mulian, a virtuous monk, seeks the help of the Buddha to rescue his mother, who has been condemned to the lowest and most painful purgatory in karmic retribution for her transgressions. Mulian cannot rescue her by his individual effort, however, but is instructed by the Buddha to offer food and gifts to monks and monasteries on the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month, which established the Ghost Festival (Chinese: 鬼 節; pinyin: guǐjié). The monk's devotion to his mother’s rescue is teaching us the value of filial piety; a virtue of respect for one's parents, elders, and ancestors. So the conclusion is you can do renovation during the Lunar- 7th month.

I've actually seen a ghost, so I know they're really around.
